Bahamas - Ragged Islands, Buenavista Cay

Our anchorage at Little Ragged Cut has suddenly gotten very busy with 14 yachts, and the idyllic serenity has disappeared. So on 31 January we (Sojourn and us) decided to up anchor and move.

Going thru the channel which we can only do over High Tide or the hour on either side

Initially we went to Hog Cay, but no sooner than we arrived, we found that ALL the boats (bar 3) also left Little Ragged and came to Hog Cay. By the end of the day there was 24 boats at Hog Cay. We elected to not go ashore with that many unknown people and first thing next day we left Hog Cay and sailed with the Genoa only up to Buenavista Cay, some 10 miles away.

The day was overcast and the breeze a little chilly.

Early morning on the 2nd February we had rain showers and this stunning double ended Rainbow

Ashore on Buenavista, Edward’s house which got damaged in Hurricane Irma is still in a major state of disrepair.

Karen, Duane and I walked the Trail across the Cay to the windward side

It was amazing to see all the Aloe plants in bloom. Apparently they only bloom every few years, and afterwards the plant dies. However the flowers and pods reseed and the whole process starts again for the next few years

It was a Very windy day and the sea was full of whitecaps

Walking back on the top ridge we could see Meshugga at anchor

From the same ridge, Duane pointed our some Ruins, which none of us had ever been to, and did not know exactly what the Ruins were, so we set off Bush Whacking to get to the Ruins, mainly following Goat paths

As we got closer we found a Pan with water and the Ruins towards the southern end. The Pan looked deeper at the Ruins, so we walked around the north end of the Pan

Following Goat paths

Our finding was confusing. Waist high walls on all 4 sides.

Water on both sides…Possibly it’s a rain water catchment in drier years….., the goats can definitely climb over the walls. The water was not very salty

Me crouching to get through on the Goat paths

Having made our way back to the beach, arms and legs a bit scrapped from the vegetation

Back to our anchorage

The day ended with a dinner invite to Sojourn. Drinks and snacks in the cockpit.

Followed by dinner in the Salon, and a game of Canaster

Thanks Karen and Duane for your amazing hospitality once again.
