USA - New York, Catskill, Dinner Out

 It’s SO exciting……

We’re going out for Dinner !!!!

I can’t recall the last time we went out to eat, it must be at least 6 months, as I recall a take-out on a beach table overlooking the sea, with Ralph and Leslie of Now & Zen, on Bimini  in the Bahamas, where we all had Cracked Conch and Kalik beer. (If this even classifies as a Dining Out experience)

But tonight, it’s to the Creekside Restuarant here in Catskill. I’m not expecting much, but still, Not to Cook, Not to do Dishes, What a delish experience…. I’m giddy with the expectation. To shower and OH what to wear … a Night Out…

Oh, but I forget, just a few days/weeks ago, in Savannah we had fun with Brad and Johanna at a Mexican Restuarant for Johanna’s birthday. Not to mention the amazing 4th July party or Dock Party……..

But I suppose this is just Nicholas and me, in our normal Cruising Mode…. A normal night without having to make dinner (and do dishes) for me is a Special Night!

Creekside Restuarant had a lot of tables outside, and we were happy to sit there without masks. Tables were well spaced out. We had a great table overlooking the river - just incase we’d not seen the water, HaHa

We both ordered what we’d not had aboard - RIBS with Onion Rings….

By the time dinner was over, a few beers and ciders, great company and excellent ribs it was time to go home…

USA - New York, Hudson River, Catskill

Early morning, mist everywhere…..

We up anchor in Esopus Cree and head out to use the north setting tide to Catskill.

USA - New York, Hudson River, Esopus Creek

We sailed north up the Hudson, sometimes motor sailing. Toward sunset we looked for an anchorage and choose a spot we’d been to before a mile south of Haverstraw Marine. The bay is small. The entrance narrow. But the bay inside is well worth the effort for a good nights sleep.

The Haverstraw Park which we overlooked is immaculate!

Going out in the morning was changeling, with low tide…..

Our next mission was to fill up with fuel, and we headed to the Haverstraw Marina

Fuel filled, Water filled, Garbage Dumped, all good!

Continuing North we bypassed the Iconic and World Renowned Military Academy ‘West Point’

As the day wore on, it was time to find an anchorage for the night and Esopus looked promising…

USA - New York, New York City,

As we left our Herb river anchorage on Thursday 8 July, we went back into the Wilmington River we were greeted with this fun sight

Out to sea, we went again directly east, sweeping NE with the current as it set in. An uneventual night night with ships passing well ahead, abeam or astern of us. However come morning, we were on a collision course with a Cosco ship. Our AIS was going mad, and our closest point of coillision was less than 100m. The ship ignored us, and in fact altered course to make a collision inevitably. We had to slow down and change course dramatically to allow it to pass infront of us at a ‘safe’ distance of about 300m.

We arrived at the outer channel marker for New York at about 4am on Tuesday 13 July. It was rainy and foggy and AIS and Radar was much appreciated. We crossed both Shipping Channels and sailed alongside the shipping channels as there were Ships transiting into New York every 20 minutes at speed of about 15 knots.

First Light had us close to the Narrows Bridge, and fog was fairly dense. We sailed under the bridge close to the Eastern piling and I was apprehensive as the bridge was far closer to our mast head than the center 180m.

The current was against us, and it being no use to battle for hours against the current going up the Hudson River, we dropped anchor and got a couple of hours sleep, especially Nicholas who had been awake all night and for over 24 hours.

Our anchorage overlooked the Statue of Liberty

The amazing New York City Skyline

A few hours later and the tide has turned, and it’s time to head up the Hudson River.
